COVID-19: England’s R number rises slightly as infection rates hit four-month highs in parts of UK
The R number is up – and so are the COVID infection rates of all the home nations – all data which will be studied carefully by Boris Johnson as he considers lifting remaining coronavirus restrictions in England from 19 July.
n outbreak can grow exponentially when the figure is above 1. When it’s below 1, it means it’s shrinking.
The current estimate means that, on average, every 10 people infected will go on to infect between 12 and 15 others.
Meanwhile, the growth rate shows the number of new infections is growing by between 3% and 7% every day.
