Barcelona Transfers: Top Striker options for 2021/22 season

Barcelona Transfers: Top Striker options for 2021/22 season. Barcelona had a huge mismanagement last season when they let legendary striker, Luis Suarez, go to Atletico Madrid. The Catalans were sure that the Uruguayan was too old to be playing at the top level and they were looking for a younger alternative. Not only were they unable to find someone to replace the veteran, Suarez also went on to lift another La Liga title but this time with Atletico.

The Catalans understood their mistake and secured a striker as soon as the season got over. Barcelona managed to get one of the biggest generational strikers of all time, Sergio Aguero. The Argentine could not agree upon a contract with Manchester City so Barca signed him on a free transfer. It seems like the Catalans learnt that age is not an important factor in football as Suarez went on to score over 20 goals for Atletico last season.

Aguero is 33 years old and only has a few years left in him but he could still have a big impact on the team. Last season the club’s main scorer was Lionel Messi who scored 30 goals in the league alone. This cannot go on as they need more scorers in the team and cannot leave it all up to one man. Thus, while Aguero is definitely a solid player, he is more of a temporary solution and the club needs a younger striker for the long run. Here are a few options that Laporta could go for this transfer window or in the next one:

#5 Donyell Malen (PSV Eindhoven | Age: 22)

The 22-year-old striker from PSV Eindhoven is a great choice for Barcelona for the future. The youngster has been gathering a lot of interest from big clubs due to his performance and it seems like he has a good career ahead of him. The player who played in three academies, Arsenal, Ajax, and PSV, has a great understanding of attacking football. He has a lot of experience at a young age and has great goal-scoring abilities as well.

Malen scored 27 goals in all competitions for PSV last season and although they could not lift any trophies, the striker was undoubtedly their standout player. Barcelona could try to secure him this season however, PSV will want a big figure from the Catalans if they are to let him go. It is a risk the Catalans will have to take as if he turns out to be a success, he can support the club for many seasons to come however, if he does not adapt well to the new league, he would be another flop like Philippe Coutinho and Martin Braithwaite.

#4 Gabriel Jesus (Manchester City | Age: 24)

Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus could be another forward the Blaugrana should look into. It does not have to be in this transfer window or even this season, however, the Brazilian could be inclined to leave Pep Guardiola’s side if he is not given an important role at the club next season. The former Palmeiras player started only 22 games in the Premier League last season although Aguero was injured or on the bench for most of the season. Jesus is already 24 years old and is entering the prime of his career; however, if Pep continues to choose others in front of him, he will leave the club for more playtime.

Currently, the Citizens are trying to secure Harry Kane as their replacement for Aguero and if that happens, it will leave little chance for Jesus to play in the starting eleven. Barcelona could wait for one transfer window and if City do sign Kane, then Jesus will more than likely be willing to join another club. The Catalans could steal the talented youngster then, and after being under Pep since 2017, Jesus will be the perfect fit for Barcelona.

#3 Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur | Age: 27)

Yes, while Manchester City are the favorites to sign the English captain, one can never write off Barcelona from big-money transfers. The Catalans are one of the most elite clubs in all of Europe and although they might not be able to match City’s transfer fee, their logo still symbolizes heritage and legacy that anyone would want to play for. Kane has made it clear that he wishes to leave Tottenham in search of trophies. Although he is one of the world’s most prolific strikers, he doesn’t have any trophies to show for it.

He has won the Premier League golden boot on three occasions and has scored 221 goals for Tottenham in 336 appearances. Kane would be an amazing signing for Barcelona but it will be difficult to go toe to toe with Manchester City financially. They will have to hope that the Spurs man is willing to take a smaller wage to join one of the most prestigious teams of all time however, it is unlikely considering the fact that City will be a much more convenient choice for the striker.

#4 Memphis Depay (Olympique Lyonnais | Age: 27)

Ronald Koeman was desperate to bring in Memphis Depay from the moment the Catalans let go of Suarez. Koeman wanted to replace the aging veteran with Depay, as he had already worked with the Dutch winger before. The player is a winger traditionally however, Koeman turned him into a number nine during their time in the Netherlands National team. He plays as a center-forward in Lyon as well and scored 20 goals while providing 12 assists in the Ligue 1. Depay becomes a free agent by the end of June this year and then Barcelona will have an opportunity to sign him for free.

Koeman could not sign him before due to monetary reasons however, this transfer window they have a good chance of getting him. PSG are their main rivals in signing him and the French side has already stolen Gini Wijnaldum from under their nose. Should Depay be motivated by money, then it is quite likely that he will not be joining the Catalans however, the Dutch player had already stated before that he would like to play for Barca so he may still be interested in joining Koeman’s side.
